Do you find yourself rushing out the door in the mornings with just enough time to throw on some clothes and drive to work? As someone who has to be in the office or at the yoga studio by 7 am 5 days out of the week, it is a challenge for me to take time for myself in the mornings. Even though most days I find it hard to pull myself out of bed, I have found a few things that have helped me start my day off with a little more intention.
Get plenty of sleep (duh) and set the bedtime alarm on your phone to remind you one hour before you would like to go to bed. What I find so great about the bedtime alarm on the iPhone is that I can track how many hours of sleep I am trying to achieve each night. This alarm also makes me aware that I need to start finishing up what I am working on on my computer so that I can start getting ready for bed.
Set a pleasant sounding alarm. Waking up to an obnoxious sound is not the ideal way to start the day in my opinion. That always just made me start my day feeling annoyed because I was abruptly woken up. Setting my alarm to be the sound of nature, effectively wakes me up in the morning but in a calmer way.
Stretch it out! Even while you are still in bed, you could take some time to do simple spinal twists or reach through your fingers and toes. Inviting some simple movement and stretches are an excellent way for you to tune in to how your body is feeling that day. Take a moment to feel grateful. To me, this one has been the most helpful. Whether its while I am stretching in bed, drinking a coffee, or cuddling Shanti, I take a few moments to feel grateful for everything. Sometimes I try to think of 3 things I am grateful for and other times I just soak in the moment…. those times are typically when Shanti is feeling extra cuddly.
