I love to watch storms roll in. Seeing the sky transform, feeling the winds and temperature shift. Usually, I am watching it all unfold from my front porch or my Amma’s back porch, but my favorite place to watch the sky change will always be the beach.
The quote “Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair” always comes to mind during these moments. Feeling the wind blow through my hair, the mist of salt water and soft sand beneath my feet. I’m fascinated by the energy of a storm building, washing away and starting fresh, but its funny to me how differently Barley reacts to a storm building.
At the first sound of thunder Barley is cowering. He has tried to hide in my closet, will crawl into my lap at the office so I can hold him, and at night when he senses a storm is coming I know because he is literally on top of me. He just wants to be protected from the unfolding of the storm. Trying to hide away from the power of thunder. Now, I know a lot of dogs are like this, but I have never had one that legitimately has to be on top of me in some way to feel protected. The best way I have calmed him down is throwing my covers over him while he cuddles against me. I guess his thought process was similar to mine when I used to be scared of noises at night – if I’m under this blanket there is no way anything can get me.
